I have a BA in Art History and an MA and MFA in Painting, so I am not qualified to be a "Folk Artist," but my work is generally referred to as "Folk Art," because that is what it looks like. I'm not really concerned with what people want to call me or my art, in fact, I'm quite happy with being known as the "Whistle Lady," which gives me a category of my own (all of my sculptures have a whistle somewhere in them).
I've loved woodworking ever since I was a kid messing around in the garage and I've equally loved things that are humorous from Mad Magazine to C-Span. I believe that the essence of good art is that it is attractive enough to draw you in for a closer look, yet possesses enough content to reward you for the time you have spent with it. Keeping this premise in mind, I tread upon the path of the comedians and political cartoonists--strewn with the banana peels of moral decay.
