MITZURA SALGIAN

Mitzura Salgian was born into a family of artists in Bucharest, Romania. She was raised and educated in her native city where, in 1976, she graduated from the Nicolae Grigorescu Art Institute, Department of Monumental Painting.

Large-scale artworks executed during her student years using the techniques of fresco, al secco, mosaic, and painting remain on display in public institutions and prominent places in Bucharest and other Romanian cities. Salgian’s oil paintings were included in the Biennial and the Municipal Art Shows of the Romanian Artists Guild in Bucharest.

Seeking freedom of expression and access to world culture, Salgian left the restrictive environment of her homeland for Italy.  By 1978 she had established a permanent residence in New York and became an American citizen in 1984.  Here, Salgain’s creative potential unfolded in original expressions of rich personal vision. Her style blends the minute description of the Dutch Old Masters’ technique with complex projections drawing from the depths of Surrealism. Planted in a world of baroque richness, metaphoric entities composed of human, vegetal, and mineral elements grow sensuously. Her paintings convey a thought sense of magic and poetry.

Salgian has also produced illustrations for periodicals such as The New York Times, Health and Games and book covers for best sellers Ballantine, Harlequin, Zebra, Dell , and Avon, published by Random House.  Her paintings have appeared in issues of magazines like Veranda, Portuguese House and Garden, Homem and Caras, as well as in Romanian publications including Romania Leterara, Romania Libera, Bucuresti-Match, Lumea, Nor Ghyank, with articles by Julio Caresma, Tudor Octavian, Sergiu Selian and other well known writers.

Her work is also included in many private collections alongside many Old and Modern Masters.  Some of the collections housing her work belong to the Marquis Luc de Clapiers and CDC Bank of North America (New York); Prince Gregoire de Brancovan (New York and Paris), Angelo Loggia (Rome); Onik Sahakian (Lisbon and New York) and many others.
